Die historischen Entwicklungen in Kanada vor 1834 stelle ich am Anfang in einem Überblick dar. Der Schwerpunkt der Arbeit gilt dem Zeitraum zwischen 1834 und der Gründung Kanadas 1867 durch den "British North America Act". 1834 kritisierte im frankophonen Niederkanada die dortige Volksvertretung Londons Vormundschaft und zeigte in 92 Punkten Forderungen und Beschwerden auf, nicht ohne Hinweise auf die amerikanische Revolution von 1776. Im englischsprachigen Oberkanada gab es 1835 vergleichbare Bestrebungen. Im "siebten Bericht des Beschwerdekomitees" wurden ähnliche Punkte wie in Niederkanada thematisiert. Ziel war es eine selbstverantwortliche Regierung zu erlangen. Die darauf folgenden Entwicklungen, wie beispielsweise die Aufstände 1837/38 und der "Canada Union Act" (1840) führten letztendlich zur Gründung Kanadas im Jahr 1867. In einem Exkurs werden Aspekte für das Bestreben nach Selbstbestimmung und Autonomie Québecs aus dem Blickwinkel des Völkerrechts beleuchtet. Am Ende der Arbeit, in der Zusammenfassung und Schlussbetrachtung werden die ausgearbeiteten Punkte gewürdigt. Über die kanadische Geschichte und die Wurzeln der Bestrebungen zur Eigenständigkeit Québecs, der "Belle Province" wie sie sich selbst auch bezeichnet, gibt es kaum deutschsprachige Literatur, welche die Ursachen und Probleme des kanadischen Föderalismus aus der Sicht Québecs
