Ausnahmen bilden Serien wie Babylon 5 oder das auf 5 Serien, 9 Filme und etliche Bücher angewachsene Star Trek-Universum, das sich gemä dem eigenen Anspruch und dem Lob zahlreicher Kritiker durch eine differenziertere Darstellung auszeichnet. Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist es, die Vielfalt und Komplexität der Inszenierung von Ethnizität bei Star Trek kritisch zu hinterfragen. Zudem werden die damit verbundenen Funktionen der Darstellung der verschiedenen Ethnien respektive Spezies (u.a. Darstellung des Eigenen durch das Fremde, Diskussion ethischer Probleme durch den Umgang mit fremden Kulturen) untersucht. Die Frage, ob der mit der Instrumentalisierung von Ethnizität verbundene humanistisch-pädagogische Anspruch von Star Trek immer durchgehalten wird, schlie t die Untersuchung ab. Die Analyse zeigt, dass trotz des Plädoyers für Verständnis und Mulitkulturalismus oft Angst vor dem Fremden induziert wird. Kulturelle Unterschiede werden teilweise durch kulturelle Assimilation aufgehoben, die fremde Kultur dadurch implizit diskriminiert. Auch sind ein gewisser Anthropozentrismus bei der Zusammensetzung der Crews und kulturimperialistische Tendenzen (Föderation als Vorbild für andere Zivilisationen) zu beobachten. Hinzu kommt ein latenter westlicher, wei geprägter Ethnozentrismus in der Inszenierung der eigenen und fremder Spezies (westliche, speziell angloamerikanische Dominierung der Föderationskultur, Favorisierung wei er Hautfarbe).
