About The Book

Die Basiliken S. Giovanni in Laterano und S. Maria Maggiore waren neben der Peterskirche die bedeutendsten Kollegiatkirchen in Rom. Die an ihnen wirkenden Klerikergemeinschaften (= Stiftskapitel) wurden von Kanonikern gebildet, über deren Herkunft aus meist führenden römischen Familien man bislang wenig wu te. Mittels der prosopographischen Methode, d.h. der Sammlung aller Einzelinformationen zu einer Personengruppe, können wichtige Bereiche des sozialen, kulturellen und wirtschaftlichen Umfelds der Kanoniker rekonstruiert werden. Als Untersuchungszeitraum wurde das 14. Jahrhundert gewählt, als das Papsttum weitgehend im südfranzösischen Avignon weilte. Da die Kanonikate an den beiden Basiliken zu den begehrtesten Kirchenpfründen der Tiber-Metropole gehörten, versuchten die Päpste und die römischen Führungsgruppen gleicherma en, ihre Vergabe zu beeinflussen. Der höhere Klerus war fest in die römische Gesellschaft integriert und konnte sich deshalb auch nicht den damaligen politischen und gesellschaftlichen Veränderungen entziehen. Einen Vertreter in einem der drei gro en Kapitel zu stellen, gehörte zu den Zielen der nach der Jahrhundertwende ökonomisch aufstrebenden Kreise. In der Sozialgeschichte der beiden hier behandelten Kapitel spiegelt sich also auch die Geschichte der Stadt Rom selbst wider.
