Die vorliegende Abhandlung ist aus einem Vortrag iiber das Thema Die Ent- stehung der baltischen Literaturen und ihre Entwicklung im Spannungsfeld zwischen heimischer Folklore und europaischer Literatur entstanden, den ich am 20. Miirz 1985 auf der 292. Sitzung der Klasse fUr Geisteswissenschaften der Rheinisch- Westfalischen Akademie der Wissenschaften gehalten habe. Wahrend der Aus- arbeitung des Manuskripts fUr die Drucklegung kam mir in zunehmendem MaBe zum BewuBtsein, daB eine befriedigende Behandlung des Themas eine Vertiefung in Fragen aus manchen Bereichen erforderte, die in dem Vortrag nur angeschnit- ten werden konnten. Insbesondere die fUr die Entstehung und Entwicklung der Literaturen des Baltikums, von denen nur die estnische, lettische und litauische behandelt werden, so wichtige vorbereitende Phase, die Herausbildung eines Schrifttums seit der Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts, muBte wenigstens in groben U mrissen skizziert werden. Auch die Behandlung der Under des Baltikums in der deutschen, polnischen und russischen wissenschaftlichen und schonen Literatur und die deutsch-und polnischsprachige Literatur im Baltikum sowie die Griin- dung von wissenschaftlichen und literarischen Gesellschaften, die Entstehung eines einheimischen Zeitschriftenwesens vor dem Hintergrund des in OstpreuBen und im Baltikum reich entfalteten deutschsprachigen und die im Baltikum betrie- benen Forschungen zur einheimischen Volksdichtung schienen mir einer aus- fiihrlicheren Darstellung zu bediirfen, um den Entstehungs-und Entwicklungs- prozeB der Literaturen des Baltikums besser verstandlich zu machen. Seine Ein- bettung in solche Zusammenhange laBt gleichzeitig auch ein Stiick europaischer Kulturgeschichte von der Mitte des 16. bis zum Ende des 19 . Jahrhunderts lebendig werden.
