Sie beschäftigt sich mit den psychischen und sozialen Auswirkungen von dauerhafter Arbeitslosigkeit des Dorfes Marienthal mit 2920 Einwohnern, von denen nahezu alle im Zuge der Weltwirtschaftskrise 1929/1930 arbeitslos wurden. Die Studie ist vor allem für ihren Methodenkanon gerühmt worden. Sie setzten als Wegbereiter der empirischen Sozialforschung erstmalig praktisch Verfahren ein, welche als solche erst in der jüngeren Forschung theoretisch definiert und entwickelt wurden. Deshalb entspricht die Studie den heutigen Ansprüchen der Forschung und dient vielen wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten bis heute als Vorbild. Die gro e Bandbreite an angewandten Verfahren macht eine Analyse der Studie hinsichtlich ihres zugrunde liegenden Forschungsparadigmas und ihrer Forschungsmethodik besonders interessant. Deshalb besteht das Ziel dieser Arbeit darin, eine Feststellung darüber zu treffen, inwiefern die Marienthal-Studie trotz quantifizierender Verfahren eine qualitative Studie ist. Zunächst wird im zweiten Kapitel Aufschluss über die beiden Typologien der empirischen Sozialforschung gegeben, die qualitative und die quantitative Forschung. Hierzu werden die Axiome beider Paradigmen dargestellt und erläutert. In Kapitel 3 wird die Marienthal-Studie anschlie end hinsichtlich ihrer Vorgehensweise analysiert und Bezug zu ihrem zugrundeliegenden Paradigma genommen, sodass eine argumentative Einordnung in ein Paradigma vorgenommen werden kann. Darauf aufbauend können schlie lich im vierten Kapitel die quantifizierenden Methoden in Betracht genommen werden.
