Das Weibliche als dunkler Kontinent, als das für das Bewusstsein unzugängliche Unheimliche, war von Anfang an ein grundlegendes Thema innerhalb der Theorie der Psychoanalyse. Dieses mystifizierte Bild der Weiblichkeit versucht die Autorin anhand einer exemplarischen Figur der griechischen Tragödie, die diesem stereotypen Bild der Frau nicht gerecht wird, zu dekonstruieren. Die Medea des Euripides verkörpert eine weibliche Figur, die die Männerfantasie von der Frau als Inkarnation des Bösen noch übersteigt, indem sie auch als eine selbständige Frau und als eine potente Mutter dargestellt wird. Die vorliegende sozial-psychoanalytische Interpretation der Medea des Euripides umfasst einen interdisziplinären Raum, der von einer sozial-kritischen Kulturanalyse der Weiblichkeitsentwürfe in der Antike, über eine Erörterung der komplexen Beziehungen zwischen griechischer Mythologie und Tragödie bis zu einer kritischen Auseinandersetzung mit den modernen Beiträgen eines psychoanalytisch orientierten theoretischen Verständnisses von Weiblichkeit reicht. In der Medea des Euripides treffen wir auf ein weibliches Subjekt, bei dem nicht nur die weibliche Sexualität dargestellt wird, sondern wir finden in ihr auch die inneren Widersprüche und die heftige Ambivalenz vereint, welche die bewusste Äu erung von Aggression bei Frauen noch heute mit sich bringt. In Medea kommen die weibliche Aggression, die leidenschaftliche Liebe und die schöpferischen Komponenten der Mutterschaft in ihrer Selbstbestimmung und Handlungsfähigkeit zum Ausdruck. Gleichzeitig ist Medea jedoch eine tragische Figur: Sie muss sich in eine mordende Frau verwandeln, um ihre Subjekthaftigkeit und ihr Selbstwertgefühl behalten zu können.
