Dies geschieht entlang verschiedener Abgrenzungskriterien wie Klima, Vegetation und Tierwelt. "Versuche, die Erdoberfläche oder Abschnitte derselben zu gliedern sind so alt wie das Bemühen, räumlich verbreitete Phänomene zu erfassen und in Karten darzustellen". Mit der Zeit wurden Kriterien entwickelt, um Räume zu differenzieren. Es werden Räume von Bevölkerungsgruppen untersucht, die dieselbe Religionszugehörigkeit oder ein ähnliches Konsumverhalten aufweisen oder Räume, die durch einen bestimmten Wasserhaushalt oder eine bestimmte Bodendynamik gekennzeichnet sind. Im Folgenden wird die Ökozone der mediterranen Subtropen genauer untersucht. Die mediterranen Subtropen nehmen lediglich einen Anteil von 1,7 Prozent der Festlandsfläche der Erde ein. Damit sind sie von allen Ökozonen die kleinste. Auf den ersten Blick scheinen die mediterranen Subtropen im Vergleich zu anderen Ökozonen relativ wahllos verteilt. Auf der Erde gibt es fünf recht kleine, voneinander isolierte Vorkommensbereiche. Die mediterranen Subtropen beschränken sich meist auf küstennahe Streifen auf den Westseiten der Kontinente. Diese Gebiete liegen auf der Nordhalbkugel zwischen dem 30. und 45. Breitenkreis, auf der Südhalbkugel - wegen der geringeren Landmasse - nur zwischen dem 30. und 38. Breitenkreis. Abgrenzungskriterien für die mediterranen Subtropen sind nur schwer zu definieren, da sich diese räumlich sehr zerstückelte Zone selbstverständlich in vielerlei Hinsicht, so z. B. Flora und Fauna unterscheidet. Im Mittelmeerraum dient der Ölbaum als Leitpflanze, die das Verbreitungsgebiet charakterisiert. Für die restlichen Gebiete der mediterranen Subtropen (z. B. Kalifornien) spielt jedoch die Verbreitung des Ölbaums zum Zwecke der Abgrenzung keine Rolle
