Mit seinen ca. 31 Millionen Einwohnern (Ohlhoff 2000, 12) ist es zwar weit davon entfernt auch eines der Bev�lkerungsreichsten L�nder der Erde zu sein, jedoch geh�rt es eindeutig zu den L�ndern in denen die meisten Ethnien und Kulturen vertreten sind. Diese Tatsache erkl�rt sich durch seine Geschichte. Um die kanadische Multikulturalismuspolitik besser verstehen zu k�nnen, bedarf es eines n�heren Blickes auf Kanadas bewegte Vergangenheit. 1.1 Die ersten Bewohner Kanadas Die ersten Menschen auf kanadischer Erde waren Pal�oindianische Jagdv�lker. Sie wanderten �ber die Beringstra e 35 000 v. Chr. nach Nordamerika ein (Ranft 2002, 8) und besiedelten die Gebiete von Neufundland bis hin zu den kanadischen Rocky Mountains (Ohlhoff 2000, 12). Sie waren lange Zeit die einzigen Bewohner des heutigen Kanada. Erst vor ca. 5000 Jahren fingen Steinzeitmenschen der Dorset-Kultur an die K�stenregionen der Arktis zu besiedeln, wurden jedoch vor etwa 1000 Jahren von den aus dem heutigen Alaska eingewanderten Thule, den Vorfahren der heutigen Eskimos, verdr�ngt. 1.2 Die ersten Europ�er Die ersten Europ�er auf kanadischer Erde waren Wikinger aus Norwegen und D�nemark. Sie landeten etwa 900 nach Christus an der K�ste Neufundlands (Ohlhoff 2000, 13). Sie schafften es jedoch nicht dauerhaft Siedlungen zu errichten. Die Gr�nde daf�r sind nicht bekannt, jedoch wird vermutet, dass die kleinen Seefahrergruppen den permanenten Angriffen der Indianer nicht standhalten konnten (Ohlhoff 2000, 21). Danach dauerte es noch 1400 Jahre bis erneut ein Europ�er Fu auf kanadischen Boden setzte. Giovanni Caboto, oder auch John Cabot, wie er im Englischen genannt wird, fand im Auftrag Englands nur f�nf Jahre nach Christopher Columbus den Weg nach Nordamerika
