Obwohl die Netzwerkanalyse in den letzten Jahren vermehrt in Studien zu wissenschaftlichen Communities eingesetzt wurde und sich die Anwendungsmöglichkeiten grundlegend vereinfacht haben, wurden netzwerkanalytische Methoden in diesem Bereich bisher in sehr geringem Umfang eingesetzt. Ebenfalls gibt es nur wenige neuere Studien, die sich systematisch mit der Einordnung des Potenzials der Methodik für den Anwendungsbereich beschäftigen. Darüber hinaus gibt es viele offene Fragen und eine fehlende methodische Einbettung bezüglich der Netzwerkanalyse in den Kommunikationswissenschaften. An diesem Punkt soll diese Arbeit ansetzten. Sie soll der Frage nachgehen, welches Potenzial die Netzwerkanalyse für die Untersuchung von wissenschaftlichen Online-Gemeinschaften hat. Forschungsfrage: Welche Erkenntnisse lassen sich durch eine Netzwerkanalyse auf Twitter über wissenschaftliche Online-Gemeinschaften gewinnen? Dazu sollen der Forschungsstand der bestehenden Literatur, Anwendungen und methodischen Instrumente aufgearbeitet werden und die praktische Anwendung über ein Fallbeispiel an einer wissenschaftlichen Online-Gemeinschaft untersucht und beschrieben werden. Die Arbeit soll als Grundlage für weitere potenzielle Untersuchungen dienen, welche auf methodische Elemente der Netzwerkanalyse in der Untersuchung von Online-Gemeinschaften, insbesondere von wissenschaftlichen, zurückgreifen möchten. Sie soll deren Stärken und Schwächen aufzeigen und gleichzeitig einen Beitrag zur methodischen Einbettung der Netzwerkanalyse in die Kommunikationswissenschaften leisten.
