Forresters, insbesondere auf seine allgemeine Modellmethodologie, stützt sich das von Dennis L. Meadows geleitete Forschungsteam am Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) und erarbeitet 1972 für den Club of Rome die Studie The Limits to Growth (Die Grenzen des Wachstums). Dennis L. Meadows und seine Mitarbeiter führen eine Systemanalyse mit einem Computerrechenmodell (World3) durch, welches die komplexe Vernetzung globaler Prozesse berücksichtigt, diese Vorgänge in Regelkreise fasst und Simulationen zu unterschiedlichen Szenarien ermöglicht. Das Programm verfolgt die Entwicklungen von Bestandsgrö en wie Bevölkerung, Industriekapital, Umweltverschmutzung und landwirtschaftlich genutzte Flächen. Der Anfangszeitpunkt des Modells wird ins Jahr 1900 verlegt, da ab diesem Zeitpunkt einigerma en zuverlässige und auswertbare Informationen vorliegen. Die Wahl des Zeithorizontes beträgt 200 Jahre . Bei den Simulationen werden mit unterschiedlich hohen Rohstoffbeständen der Erde gerechnet und eine unterschiedliche Effizienz von landwirtschaftlicher Produktion, Geburtenkontrolle oder Umweltschutz angesetzt. In dieser Arbeit werden die dem Bevölkerungssektor zugrundeliegenden Strukturen, die Schnittstellen zu den übrigen Sektoren und die sich hieraus ergebenden Szenarien untersucht.
