About The Book

1m urspriinglichen Entwurf dieses Handbuchs vor zwei Jahrzehnten hatten wir geplant, dem Band II "Die Zelle" in Band III die allgemeine Pathologie der "Zwischensubstanzen, Gewebe und Organe" folgen zu lassen. Aus vielfachen Er- fahrungen ist diese strenge Zasur zwischen den Zellen und den Zwischensubstanzen heute nicht mehr aufrecht zu halten. Das gilt besonders yom Nervensystem in seinen normalen und krankhaft veranderlen Strukturen. So sind wir HERMANN HAGER besonders dankbar, daB er im ersten Beitrag dieses Bandes: "Allgemeine morphologische Pathologie des Nervensystems" von der unauflosbaren Einheit der cellularen und zwischenzelligen Strukturen des Nervensystems in Orlhologie und Pathologie ausgegangen ist. Erstmals wieder seit SPIELMEYERS "Histopathologie des Nervensystems" von 1922 werden hier die Strukturelemente des Nervensystems unter den Prinzipien der allgemeinen Patho- logie dargestellt, diesmal vor allem auch die Veranderungen der Feinstrukturen im elektronenmikroskopischen Bild. Unter dem Leitmotiv "Organstruktur als Grundlage der Organleistung und Organerkrankung" schlieBt sich der Beitrag von HUGO NOETZEL tiber "Das zentrale und periphere N ervensystem" an; er veranschaulicht die Bedeutung des Bauplans des Nervensystems fUr seine Pathologie an einer Reihe typischer Er- krankungen. Die Vereinigung dieser beiden Beitrage im gleichen Bandteil rechtferligt sich nicht zuletzt durch das allgemeine groBe theoretische und praktische Interesse fUr die morphologische Pathologie des Nervensystems in unseren Tagen.
