Königsfrieden 386 v. u. Z. (auch Frieden des Antalkidas genannt) und dem Ende der thebanischen Hegemonie nach der Schlacht von Mantineia 362 v. u. Z. stellte Historiker lange vor ein Rätsel. Sie wurde abwechselnd als Periode des Verfalls der klassischen Blüte Hellas oder alternativ als ultimative Vollendung derselben interpretiert. Abhängig vom geschichtsphilosophischen Standpunkt wurde diese Zeit der Wirren - im Sinne des Historismus - als Endpunkt einer Epoche gesehen beziehungsweise - einer historischen Teleologie verpflichtet - als Ausgangspunkt der Vollendung des Griechentums im Hellenismus. All diesen Deutungen ist gemein, dass sie diese Periode nicht wirklich einzuordnen wussten oder die grundlegenden Prozesse, die sich in dieser Zeit vollzogen keiner eingehenden Beachtung würdigten. Die neuere Forschung ist dazu übergegangen, die verwirrende Vielfalt der Ereignisse stärker zu abstrahieren und die Veränderungen in den politischen und militärischen Strukturen genauer zu betrachten. Bei einer solchen Herangehensweise zeigt sich schnell, dass diese Zeit vor allem von dem Versuch geprägt war, das politische System Griechenlands den sich ändernden Rahmenbedingungen anzupassen. Diese Rahmenbedingungen bestanden vor allem in dem allmählichen Aufstieg bundesstaatlicher Strukturen im Norden Griechenlands sowie in einem sich modernisierendes Kriegswesen, dem die einzelnen Poleis in ihrer klassischen Struktur kaum noch etwas entgegenzusetzen hatten. Dementsprechend war die Zeit zwischen dem Ende des Peloponnesischen Krieges und der Gründung des Korinthischen Bundes durch Philipp II. durch den Versuch gekennzeichnet eine dauerhafte und stabile Friedensordnung zu etablieren.
