Die Entwicklung der Naturwissenschaft ist im allgemeinen ein gleichformiger, stetiger Vorgang. Gleichwohl sind darin bestimmte Perioden unterscheidbar, die sich durch hervorragende experimentelle Entdeckungen oder neue theoretische Gedanken abheben. Ein solcher Wendepunkt lag um das Jahr 1600 und kniipft sich an den Namen GALILEO GALlLEIS, der die Grundlagen der empirischen Forschungs- methode durch seine Untersuchungen mechanischer Vorgange schuf und auBerdem iiberzeugende Beweise des fiinfzig Jahre vorher aufgestellten Kopernikanischen Weltsystems erbrachte. Das bedeutete das Ende der scholastischen Naturphilosophie, die sich auf die Lehre des Aristoteles und den Anfang der modernen Naturwissenschaft. stiitzte, Ein anderer Wendepunkt kam um das Jahr 1900 durch eine Flut experimenteller Entdeckungen Rontgenstrahlen, Radioaktivitat, Elektron u. a. - und durch zwei neue grundlegende Theorien - Quantentheorie und Relativitatstheorie. Die Quantentheorie wurde genau an der Jahrhundertwende geboren, als MAX PLANCK seinen revolutionaren Begriff der Energieatome oder "Quanten" verkiinC;lete. Das war ein fiir die Entwicklung der Naturwissenschaft so entscheiden- des Ergebnis, daB es gewohnlich als die Grenze zwischen "klassischer Physik" und "moderner" oder "Quantenphysik" angesehen wird. Die Relativitatstheorie sollte streng genommen nicht mit einem bestimmten Datum und einem bestimmten Namen verbunden werden. Sie lag um 1900 sozusagen in der Luft, und mehrere groBe Mathematiker und Physiker - um nur einige Namen zu nennen: LARMOR, FITZ- GERALD, LORENTZ, POINCARE - waren im Besitze von wichtigen Ergebnissen. Im Jahre 1905 gab EINSTEIN eine neue Begriindung der Theorie mit Hilfe sehr allgemeiner, philosophischer Prinzipien, und einige Jahre spater entwickelre HERMANN MINKOWSKI ihre end- giiltige logische und mathematische Darstellung.
