Die ersten drei Entwicklungsjahre im Leben eines Menschen sind von besonders prägender Bedeutung. In dieser Zeit finden viele schnell aufeinander folgende Entwicklungsschritte statt. Ein Kind wird zahlreichen risikofördernden und risikomildernden Faktoren ausgesetzt, die für seine spätere Entwicklung bestimmend sind. Schon ein verspäteter oder verpasster Entwicklungsschritt kann ungeahnt schwerwiegende Folgen nach sich ziehen. Gleichzeitig scheinen Kinder über einen einen angeborenen "Schutzmantel" zu verfügen, der ihnen die Fähigkeit zur Resistenz gegenüber bestimmten Einflüssen gibt. Die Häufung von Risikofaktoren macht es Kindern allerdings schwer, diesen natürlichen Schutzmantel voll zu entwickeln. Behutsamkeit, Einfühlungsvermögen und Wärme sind für die frühkindliche Lebensphase von zentraler Bedeutung. Nicht jedes Risikokind wird später ein Problemkind - aber das gesellschaftliche Umfeld der "Risiko-Familien" sollte alle Einflussmöglichkeiten nutzen, um risikomildernd zu wirken.
