Die auf Forschungsbefunden, sowie u.a. der Bindungstheorie nach Bowlby (1969) begründete klientzentrierte Entwicklungstheorie besagt: Im Säuglings- und Kleinkindalter baut sich das Selbst- und Fremdverständnis abhängig von feinfühliger Deutung und Beantwortung angeborener Gefühls- und Lebensäu erungen auf. Sehr gro e Relevanz dabei hat das selbstwertregelnde Bindungsbedürfnis nach positiver Beachtung und Orientierung durch primäre Bezugspersonen. Diesbezüglich beeinflusst bereits in den ersten Lebensjahren ein anhand durchschnittlicher Beziehungserfahrungen ausgebildeter, das spätere Leben prägender Verhaltensstil die Aktualisierung des Selbstbildes. Jene kann über die Kind- und Jugendzeit in Verbindung mit emotional getönten introjected values primärer Bezugspersonen fälschliche Selbstkonzeptannahmen hervorrufen, mitbedingt durch u.a. den sozialökologischen Lebensraum, sowie genetische Veranlagung. Dabei wird intrinsisch motiviert gesundes Unterscheiden zwischen förderlicher und nicht-förderlicher gesamtorganismischer Erfahrung zugunsten an introjekts angepasst, verzerrter Wahrnehmung vor dem Bewusstsein verleugnet. Bedrohliches Inkongruenzerleben eigenen Selbstwertverlustes soll somit vermieden werden. Entsprechend entwicklungsförderliche Bedürfnisbefriedigungen werden vernachlässigt und innerseelische Stabilität symptomatisch herzustellen ersucht.
