'Abdallah Ibn Mas'ud, ein Gefährte des Propheten Mu?ammad (s.a.s.), berichtete: Während ich mit dem Propheten in einem Palmenhain war, und er sich auf einen blattlosen Palmenzweig stützte, kamen einige Juden vorbei. Die einen von ihnen sagten zu den anderen: "Befragt Mu?ammad über die Seele!" Ein anderer von ihnen sagte: "Was hegt bei euch Zweifel über ihn?" Die anderen sagten: "Niemals werdet ihr von ihm das hören, was euch stutzig macht." Einige sagten: "Befraget ihn doch!" Da stellten sie ihm die Frage über die Seele, und der Prophet schwieg für eine Weile und gab ihnen keinerlei Antwort. Ich wusste, dass er gerade dabei war, eine Offenbarung zu empfangen. Da trat ich anstandshalber einen Schritt von ihm zurück. Als die Offenbarung soweit war, rezitierte er: "Und sie befragen dich über die Seele. Sprich: Die Seele ist eine Angelegenheit meines Herrn; und euch ist vom Wissen nur wenig gegeben." Doch woraus ist die Seele? Woher kommt sie? Stirbt sie?
