Sie ist heute die zentrale Voraussetzung für eine Teilhabe am wirtschaftlichen, politischen und gesell-schaftlichen Leben. Bildung bedeutet dabei jedoch auch immer Auslese. Der vorherrschende Meritokratieansatz rechtfertigt diese mit den unterschiedlichen Begabungen der Schüler. Verschiedenste Untersuchungen dagegen belegen, dass Bildungschancen nicht nur von der kognitiven Leistungsfähigkeit eines Schülers, sondern auch von seiner sozialen Herkunft bestimmt werden. So unterstrich die letzte PISA-Studie, dass der Zusammenhang zwischen sozialer Lage und Bildungserfolg in Deutschland so hoch ist, wie in kaum einem anderen OECD-Land (OECD 2007: 37). Dass Bildungschancen sozial bedingt sind ist daher heute unumstritten. Über die genauen Mechanismen der Reproduktion sozialer Ungleichheiten im Bildungsbereich herrscht jedoch Uneinigkeit. Die folgende Arbeit wird versuchen, bestehende Chancenunterschiede im deutschen Bildungssystem anhand der durch Pierre Bourdieu entwickelten Konzepte von Habitus und Kapital zu erklären. Nach einer kurzen Charakterisierung dieser Kernelemente und einer Darstellung ihrer Auswirkungen auf die gesellschaftliche Ordnung, werden dabei zunächst Bourdieus eigene Erkenntnisse zur sozialen Bedingtheit von Bildungschancen näher betrachtet. Im späteren Verlauf soll dann untersucht werden, welchen Einfluss Habitus und familiäre Kapitalressourcen auf die Bildungschancen deutscher Schüler haben. Abschlie end wird die Frage zu klären sein, in wie weit das Schulsystem zur Konservierung sozialer Ungleichheiten beiträgt.
