Das vorliegende Buch ist die zweite Ver�ffentlichung innerhalb der Reihe "Afrika-Studien", die �ber den rein wirtschaftswissenschaftlichen Bereich hinausgeht und sich mit sozialwissenschaftliehen Fragen im weiten Sinne des 1 Wortes befa t . Es ist eine systematische und zum Teil kritisch-analytische Bestandsaufnahme der Forschungst�tigkeit der letzten zehn Jahre in Zentral- Ostafrika auf dem Gebiet der Geschichtsforschung, Ethnologie, Soziologie, Sozialpsychologie, Psychologie und National�konomie, erwachsen aus der Vorbereitung einer Studie �ber die "Situation und Rolle der Frau in der wirtschaftlichen und sozialen Entwicklung Ostafrikas". Die Afrika-Studien- stelle beauftragte die Verfasserirr dieses Buches im September 1963, w�hrend eines sechsmonatigen Studienaufenthaltes in Ostafrika dort die notwendigen Daten und Informationen zu sammeln, die zur Ausarbeitung des eigentlichen Forschungsplanes ben�tigt wurden. Diese Sammlung von Informationen sollte zugleich Anhaltspunkte f�r ein 1965 beginnendes gr� eres Programm der Sozialforschung in Ostafrika liefern, sowie den laufenden wirtschafts- wissenschaftlichen und anderen Forschungsvorhaben der Afrika-Studien- stelle dienlich sein. Die Notwendigkeit einer engen Zusammenarbeit der Wirtschaftsfor- schung mit den benachbarten sozialwissenschaftliehen Disziplinen braucht heutzutage auch in Deutschland nicht mehr betont zu werden. Die inter- disziplin�re Form der Forschung gibt uns gerade in Afrika am ehesten eine Chance, zu wirklichkeitsnahen und theoretisch gesicherten Ergebnissen zu kommen. Werden doch in Afrika die wirtschaftlichen Vorg�nge auf natio- naler und regionaler Ebene sowohl mitbestimmt durch die Eigenart traditio- neller Wirtschaften auf dem "grass-roots level", als auch durchVerhaltens- und Denkweisen, die wir schwer nachvollziehen k�nnen und die st�rker als bei uns Menschen der westlichen Industriegesellschaft im nicht-�konomischen und irrationalen Bereich wurzeln.
