Kaum ein Unternehmen kann diese Frage heutzutage im Zuge der Strategieplanung oder der generellen Suche nach Rationalisierungspotentialen umgehen. Der immer intensiver und internationaler werdende Wettbewerb übt Kosten- und Leistungsdruck auf Unternehmen aller Branchen aus. Mehr denn je werden sie daher heutzutage vor die Make-or-buy-Entscheidung gestellt. Viele global agierende Unternehmen, aber auch kleine und mittelständische (KMU), entscheiden sich in diesem Fall für buy und somit für die Auslagerung von betrieblichen Prozessen oder Funktionen, die dann von einem externen Dienstleister ausgeführt werden. Auch der externe Reinigungsdienst im Firmengebäude dient als Beispiel für Outsourcing. Unternehmen erhoffen sich durch diese Ma nahme in erster Linie Kosteneinsparungen. Die Dienstleister sind in den Outsourcing-Projekten meist aus verschiedenen Gründen in der Lage, kostengünstiger zu produzieren. Auslagernde Unternehmen möchten sich hingegen auf die Kernkompetenzen konzentrieren und insgesamt flexibler werden. Seit vielen Jahren werden verschiedene Formen des Outsourcings als Mittel genutzt, um mindestens die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit beizubehalten. Trotz der weit verbreiteten Ausgliederungs-Strategie ist diese Form der strategischen Planung nicht unumstritten. Denn bei einem scheiternden Outsourcing-Projekt werden die Funktionen wieder zurück in das eigene Unternehmen geholt. Der erneute Aufbau der benötigten Infrastruktur verursacht dann Kosten. Obwohl Outsourcing häufig als erfolgreiches Instrument für Unternehmen angesehen wird, ist der Erfolg eben nicht garantiert und kann die wirtschaftliche Lage der Betriebe sogar verschlechtern.
