Das Elektronenmikroskop hat der submikroskopischen Morphologie zu einem ungeahnten Aufschwung verholfen. Die dank der Anwendung dieses Instrumentes laufend erscheinenden Arbeiten sind so zahlreich, da es un- möglich geworden ist, die . gesamte "Submikroskopische Morphologie des Protoplasmas und seiner Derivate" in einem handlichen Buch darzustellen, wie dies früher geschah, bevor das Übermikroskop zur Verfügung stand (Borntraeger, Berlin 1938). In der vorliegenden Monographie ist da- her nur der Feinbau des C y top 1 a sm a s und seine Differenzierung be- handelt, und zwar vornehmlich auf Grund der seit der Einführung des Elektronenmikroskops erschienenen Literatur. Hinsichtlich der älteren Dokumentation und des Schrifttums über die in der submikroskopischen Morphologie noch immer unentbehrlichen indirekten Untersuchungsmetho- den muR auf die beiden englischen N uauflagen meine's oben erwähnten Buches (Elsevier, Amstel'dam und New York 1948 und 1953) verwiesen werden, da die deutsche Ausgabe von 1938 vollständig vergriffen ist. Im vorliegenden Bande wird versucht, eine Übersicht über ein zur Zeit stür- misch bearbeitetes Gebiet zu erhalten und allgemein gültige Gesichtspunkte über die Cytoplasmastruktur aufzustellen. Wegen der gegenwärtigen Un- vollkommenheit der elektronenmikroskopischen Präpariermethoden für so wasserreiche und labile Systeme, - wie sie die Cytoplasten vorstellen, mu .;, ten zur Erhärtung der gewonnenen Erkenntnisse die Zell ehe m i e und die Zell p h y s i k herangezogen werden. Erst wenn es gelingt, der Z e - p h y si 010 gi e einwandfreie morphologische Unterlagen für die L()kali- sierung der verschiedenen ineinandergreifenden Teilprozesse der Lebens- vorgänge innerhalb der Zelle zu liefern.
