About The Book

Die vorliegende Studie entstand aus einem sich beim ex- perimentellen Arbeiten ergebenden Bediirfnis, genaueren Einblick, als das bisher moglich war, in die Variabilitat niederer Organismen zu gewinnen. Beim Anwachsen der in dieses Gebiet fallenden Literaturangaben stellte sich der Wunsch ein, die gesichteten Er- gebnisse der Literaturzusammenstellung auch in theoretische Be- ziehung zur Deszendenzforschung zu setzen. Wie weit mir das ge- lungen ist, wird nur die Kritik der Fachgenossen zeigen konnen. Ein groBer Teil der iiber die Variabilitat der Mikroorganismen gemachten Beobachtungen findet sich in zahlreichen Zeitschriften und Biichern zerstreut, und haufig ist aus dem Titel der Arbeiten kein Anzeichen dafiir zu entnehmen, daB sie Angaben iiber diese Variabilitat enthalten. Ich glaube, daB ich ein gutes Teil dieser Angaben ausgegraben habe; doch mogen mir zahIreiche ent- gangen sein. Die Losung meiner Aufgabe war auf verschiedene Weise mog- lich. Einmal konnten aIle Details der Literaturangaben im Text mitverarbeitet werden. Auf diese Weise ware eine ziemlich um- fangreiche Abhandlung zustande gekommen, deren Lektiire durch die Angabe vieler Einzelheiten fiir aIle Nichtspezialforscher er- miidend gewesen ware. Weiterhin hatte auf die Angabe dieser Details mit dem Hinweis auf die Literatur ganz"verzichtet werden konnen; aber selbst dieser Hinweis wiirde das Auffinden der in Frage stehenden Angaben nicht immer leicht gemacht haben. Ich hielt es daher fiir besser, die zur Nachpriifung notigen Einzelheiten in systematischer Weise gesammelt und chronologisch geordnet zu- sammen mit dem Literaturnachweis hinter dem Text der Studie abzudrucken, wodurch einerseits eine Erschwerung der Lektiire vermieden, andererseits ein Nachlesen meiner Beweise erleichtert Vorwort.
