Aus der Idee des Gründers Rudolf Steiner (1861 - 1925), ein neues pädagogisches Konzept des Lernens zu ermöglichen, wurde 1919 die erste Waldorfschule gegründet. Die Fragen, die offen im Raum stehen sind diese: Ist die Waldorfschule wirklich so frei und was sind die tatsächlichen Unterschiede zu einer staatlichen Schule, zu einem Gymnasium? Das Gymnasium, eine an den Staat gebundene Schule, mit festen Bildungsaufträgen, mit festen Regeln verankert in Curricula, geleitet durch den Staat, mit einer klar sichtbaren Lehrerhierarchie, mit festen Vorgaben von Gesetzen und Lernstoffen im Gegensatz zu einer Schule, die Ihre Gesetze selbst formuliert. Im Gegensatz zu einer Schule, dessen Lehrer alle die gleiche Rolle spielen. Wo die Erziehung zum Menschen und die Förderung der inneren Werte an erster Stelle steht. Ein gemeinsames Ziel steht im Vordergrund, nur die Gewichtigkeit ist differenziert verteilt. Den Schüler auf das spätere Leben vorzubereiten und in gewisser Art und Weise ein Erziehungsauftrag zu erfüllen.
