Seit dem Erscheinen von J . WALTHERS bereits klassischem Werk uber "Das Gesetz der Wustenbildung" im Jahre 1900 ist eine Flut von Arbeiten uber die Wusten teils in Aufsatzen in Fachzeit- schriften, teils in Lehrbuchern veroffentlicht worden. Wir besitzen auch ausgezeichnete Monographien einzelner Wusten, wie die von E. F. GAUTIER der Sahara, von H. MORTENSEN der Atacama oder von E. KAISER der Diamantenwuste Sudafrikas. Es gibt zudem eine vorzugliche landerkundliche Darstellung der Sahara fUr einen breiteren Leserkreis von H. SCHIFFERS. Eine gemeinverstandliche Behandlung aller Wusten der Erde wurde aber meines Wissens bisher nicht verfaBt. Das "Bild der Wuste", das der Autor vor zwei Jahren herausgab, behandelt nicht die einzelnen Wusten der Erde und ihre Erforschung, sondern gilt mehr einer Milieuschil- derung der Wuste im allgemeinen sowie eigenen und fremden Erlebnissen auf Wustenreisen. Wenige Zweige der Geographie werden so sehr wie die Wustenforschung von ungeklarten Fragen beherrscht, und es konnte nicht vermieden werden, auf viele von ihnen hinzuweisen.
