Unser obiges Leitwort hat volle Geltung nicht nur flir die Pflanze, sondern naturlich auch fur das Tier; denn in beiden Lebensreichen nimmt der Organismus seinen Anfang mit einer Zelle und sein Leben ist zumindest die Summierung des Lebens seiner Zellen. Die Frage nach der Vermehrung der Zellen war daher einmal das grundlegendste Problem der Biologie und das erste der Zytologie uberhaupt; denn seine positive Losung entschied erst uber den Wert der ZeUenlehre als selbstandige Wissenschaft, die nur mit der Erkenntnis beginnen konnte, daB ihr Gegenstand, die Zelle, ein autonomes Individuum ist, welches sich wie ein kleiner Organismus durch Assimilation erhalt und durch Selbstteilung vermehrt, wenn es aber ein Baustein einer Pflanze odeI' eines Tieres ist, sie durch seine Vermehrung vergronert. Die Ent- deckung der Zellteilung kann daher als die Geburtsstunde der Zyto. logie und in gewissem Sinne auch der modernen Biologie betrachtet werden. Ursprunglich verstand man unter der Zellteilung die Vermeh- rung der Zellen, d. h. ihre Zerlegung in zwei odeI' viele gesonderte Stucke; die Rolle des Kernes hierbei blieb bis zur Zeit der Anwendung besonderer Beobachtungsmethoden verborgen. Nach der Entdeckung der selbstandigen Teilung des Kernes wur;le es klar, dan die Zellvermehrung nur der AbschluB einer Teilung aUer plasmatischen lnhaltskorper, darunter in erster Linie des Kernes ist, die meist, aber nicht unbedingt aufeinanderfolgen.
