Die Entwicklung schreitet in rasantem Tempo voran, was manche Menschen mit Erstaunen und Bewunderung, andere hingegen mit Angst und Unsicherheit zur Kenntnis nehmen. Ein Beispiel ist die Möglichkeit selbstfahrender Autos, die bis vor einiger Zeit nur in Science Fiction Filmen möglich war. Statt Menschen übernehmen vollends Maschinen und Algorithmen die Kontrolle über die Fahrzeuge und ersetzen den Menschen. Diese Entwicklung bietet Chancen und Risiken zugleich, denn einerseits machen schon jetzt Fahrassistenzsystem zur automatischen Spur- und Abstandshaltung das Fahren sicherer, andererseits bestehen gerade erhebliche Vorbehalte der maschinellen Steuerung gegenüber, wenn es um ethische Kernfragen des autonomen Fahrens geht. Diese Möglichkeiten lassen sich auch auf die Wirtschaft übertragen, denn sowohl in der Industrie als auch dem Dienstleistungsgewerbe verändern digitale Inventionen den Markt. Oft teilen sich Mensch und Maschine Tätigkeiten innerhalb diverser Wertschöpfungsketten und ergänzen sich somit, allerdings gibt es auch Entwicklungen, bei denen der Mensch obsolet wird, wie beispielsweise bei Prozessüberwachungen oder im Einzelhandel, wo sich der Kunde das passende Produkt online selbst aussucht. Die Frage nach der Zukunft der menschlichen Arbeitskraft in der Industrie 4.0 bzw. die Einflüsse von Maschinen, Computern und Technologien werden gegenwärtig kontrovers diskutiert. Die Auswirkungen auf Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft sind noch unklar, denn der Fortschritt verläuft rasant und so ist gegenwärtig nicht abzusehen, welche Möglichkeiten die nahe Zukunft bietet.
