1m vorliegenden Bueh werden wir uns mit der Differentialgeometrie der Kurven und Flaehen im dreidimensionalen Raum besehiiftigen [2, 7]. Wir werden dabei besonderes Gewieht darauf legen, einen "ansehauliehen" Einbliek in die differentialgeometrisehen Begriffe und Satze zu gewinnen. Zu dies em Zweek werden wir, soweit sieh dies in naheliegender Weise er- mogliehen lal3t, den differentialgeometrisehen Objekten elementargeome- trisehe oder, wie wir dafiir aueh sagen wollen, differenzengeometrisehe Modelle gegeniiberstellen und deren elementargeometrisehe Eigensehaften mit differentialgeometrisehen Eigensehaften der Kurven und Flaehen in Be- ziehung bringen. Wegen dieses methodisehen Gesiehtspunktes tragt das Bueh den Titel "Differenzengeometrie". Den ersten kraftigen Anstol3 zu einer solehen "ansehauliehen Diffe- rentialgeometrie" gab der Geometer Sebastian Finsterwalder (1892-1951) in seiner Sehrift "Meehanisehe Beziehungen bei der Flaehendeformation" [ 10]. Aul3erdem haben diese Art der Differentialgeometrie aueh H. Graf [11, 13] und, in etwas anderer Weise, O. Baier [8,9] gepflegt. Der An- teil von H. Graf ist sehr erheblieh, wesentlieh umfassender als er sieh im Literaturverzeiehnis naehweisen Hil3t. Das I. Kapitel bringt zur Vorbereitung eine allgemeine Einfiihrung in die Differentialgeometrie, wobei die differenzengeometrisehe Methode nur teilweise beniitzt wird. In voUem Umfang kommt diese erst in den beiden weiteren Kapiteln zur Geltung. Das II. Kapitel behandelt spezielle Flaehen und zwar insbesondere Probleme der Verbiegungen ( = langentreue stetige Deformationen) dieser Flaehen. Den Gegenstand des III. Kapitels bildet die Theorie der sogenannten infinitesimalen Flaehenverbiegung, wobei sieh aueh projektiv-geometrisehe Beziehungen ergeben werden.
