Die Digitalisierung ist ein weltweites Phänomen und betrifft alle Lebensbereiche von der Industrie über die Energieversorgung bis hin zur Politik und Bildung. Auch im Gesundheitswesen ist die digitale Revolution angekommen. Die Nutzung digitaler Anwendungen im Gesundheitswesen ist weltweit unterschiedlich stark ausgeprägt. Obwohl Deutschland in der demografischen Entwicklung viele Parallelen zu anderen europäischen Ländern aufweist, hinkt Deutschland im EU-Ländervergleich hinterher. Die Alterung der Gesellschaft, der Pflegenotstand und die Kostenexplosion im Gesundheitswesen stellen das Gesundheitssystem des Landes vor gro e Herausforderungen und erfordert ein kulturelles Umdenken und den Zugang zu neuen Technologien. Digitale Technologien sollen nicht nur pflegebedürftigen Menschen die Möglichkeit geben, selbstbestimmt und sicher versorgt zu werden, sondern auch die Pflegenden im Pflegealltag unterstützen. Überdies soll die Digitalisierung einerseits zu Kostenersparnis und andererseits zu Qualitäts-, Effizienz- und Effektivitätssteigerung führen. Zu den digitalen Innovationen im Gesundheitswesen gehören unter anderem die Telemedizin, die elektronische Patientenakte, das elektronische Rezept, das Ambient Assisted Living System und die Robotik, hier im Kontext Pflege.
