Wer genau sind die Akteure dabei? Wie genau wird digitalisiert? Nach welchen Kriterien wird welches Material digitalisiert? Wo und wie lange werden Digitalisate gespeichert? Ferner soll das gewählte Beispiel eine allgemeine Abstraktion des Begriffes der Digitalisierung erlauben, um dann zu fragen, welche Prinzipien oder Narrative von Archiven auch nach beziehungsweise während der Digitalisierung erhalten bleiben. Hierbei soll der Fokus, wie schon im Eingangszitat erwähnt, auf die schon vor der technischen Digitalisierung in Archiven angewandten schriftlichen kontextualisierenden Funktionssysteme gelenkt werden; hierzu zählen zum Beispiel Indexierungen, Registraturen, Bildmetadaten und andere Klassifikationssysteme und Archivordnungen. Letztendlich soll hierdurch auf der einen Seite aufgezeigt werden, inwiefern die Anlagen für eine Digitalisierung in Archiven schon lange vor ihrem Beginn etabliert wurden. Auf der anderen Seite soll auch verdeutlicht werden, welche Vorteile sich aus der Digitalisierung in Bezug auf Produktion, Ordnung, Haltbarkeit und Konsumption ergeben.
