All students deserve a safe, respectful school environment

Students who identify as lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, or transgendered are susceptible to dropping out of school. This book provides professional development ideas and real-life vignettes that will help educational leaders foster a more caring school culture not only for LGBT students, but for all students. Peter DeWitt provides specific strategies for school leaders that include:

  • Implementing a student code of conduct and school board policies to safeguard students
  • Helping staff members recognize and respond to overt and covert LGBT issues
  • Ways to include appropriate LGBT topics in the curriculum
  • Supporting Gay-Straight Alliances (GSA) in middle and high school settings

Peter DeWitt has been the Principal of Poestenkill Elementary School in the Averill Park Central School District in Upstate, NY, USA since 2006. Prior to being a principal, he taught elementary school in several city schools for eleven years. He is a freelance writer for Vanguard Magazine (SAANYS) and the International Center for Leadership in Education (ICLE), where he is also an educational consultant. He has written two young adult novels, a children′s short story, and a children′s picture book. His articles have appeared in education journals at the state, national and international level. In addition, DeWitt is an adjunct professor in the Graduate School of Education at the College of Saint Rose. Since January of 2008, he has been the educational consultant for News Channel 13 (WNYT, NBC Affiliate). He does parenting segments with reporter Subrina Dhammi and education segments with anchor/reporter Elaine Houston. He is a proud endorser of the Save Our Schools March and National Call to Action, and wrote his doctoral dissertation on the subject of safeguarding sexually diverse students.
