Discrete Mathematics is designed to serve as a textbook for a single-semester course on Discrete Mathematics for undergraduate students of Anna University, Chennai and Tirunelveli. Primarily meant for undergraduate students of engineering in computer science (CS) and information technology (IT), this book will also prove useful to students of BSc (CS and IT) and to postgraduate students enrolled in programmes such as MCA, ME (CS) and MSc (CS and IT). Beginning with a lucid introduction to logic and proof techniques, the book goes on to cover several important topics such as combinatorics and graph theory along with algebraic systems, lattices and Boolean algebra. These chapters discuss various crucial concepts such as predicates and quantifiers, proof techniques, pigeonhole principle, mathematical induction, recurrence relations, subgraphs, isomorphism, Eulerian and Hamiltonian graphs, colouring and covering, trees and networks, semigroups and monoids, groups, cosets and many more. Written in an easy-to-understand manner, the book includes a large number of solved examples which illustrate problem-solving methodology. It contains an extensive set of exercises showing a good gradation of difficulty levels to test the students understanding of the concepts discussed. A summary at the end of each chapter reviews the key concepts discussed.

S. Santha is currently teaching at Sri Meenakshi Government College for Women, Madurai. Prior to this, she has served as Professor and Head of Department of Mathematics at Noorul Islam College of Engineering, Kumaracoil. She has a teaching experience of almost two decades. She has authored several textbooks and a number of papers in journals of national and international repute. Her main area of research interest is stochastic processes.
