Chaque jour, des centaines de personnes disparaissent dans des circonstances très étranges. Si certaines d'entre elles sont retrouvées, leurs morts restent parfois inexpliquées et mystérieuses. Les policiers, habitués à résoudre les meurtres et les crimes sont dans ces cas là bien incapables de donner avec certitude leurs conclusions.

Trois gardiens de phare qu'on ne reverra jamais, un groupe de randonneurs retrouvés tués dans des circonstances atroces en Sibérie, un pilote d'avion qui se volatilise avec son appareil au-dessus des eaux australiennes, une famille française qui disparaît sur la route un soir de Noël, ou encore un adolescent qui s'évapore dans la nature alors qu'il est en pleine conversation téléphonique avec son père...

Toutes ces histoires sont vraies et ont défrayé la chronique chacune à leur époque. Certaines personnes sont toujours recherchées par la police et/ou les familles. Après avoir relaté les faits de chacune de ces affaires, l'auteure expose les différentes hypothèses, officielles et officieuses. Pour certaines histoires, des théories surnaturelles comme l'enlèvement par des extraterrestres, une rencontre avec le Dogman ou encore les couloirs hantés d'un hôtel, sont avancées. Chacun fera le tri, selon ses propres croyances, et se forgera son opinion, afin d'espérer s'approcher au plus près de la vérité.

Adepte d'histoires étranges, policières et mystérieuses, ce livre a été préfacé par Albert Spano, animateur de la matinale sur RFM, mais également auteur du roman policier, PORNOPOLIS.

Esther Hervy est une auteure parisienne née en 1977. Elle a publié plusieurs romans (Blackstage, Psychospace, Emprise) et beaucoup de nouvelles de genre fantastique/horreur (Le placard et autres nouvelles fantastiques, Dors tranquille...) ainsi qu'un récit parlant des dures conditions de vie d'un réfugié Syrien (Tant que le soleil se lèvera).
