A exceção do, ainda hoje existente, Museu de História Natural da Universidade de Coimbra, criado pela Reforma Pombalina de 1772 que, talvez pelo facto de ser um Museu de Ciência, tem sido esquecido, como instituição cultural, a esmagadora maioria dos autores que se têm debruçado sobre a museologia em Portugal, são unânimes em declarar que o Museu Sisenando Cenáculo Pacence, criado por D. Frei Manuel do Cenáculo Vilas-Boas em Beja, em 1791, é o primeiro museu português.

Ao pretender esboçar uma visão histórica sobre a museologia em Portugal, e tendo tomado estas duas instituições como referências, fui-me apercebendo, com a ajuda do artigo de Vilhena Barbosa, "Museus criados em Portugal até ao fim do século XVIII", que simultaneamente e em contemporaneidade, se gerara um movimento museológico no país cujas raízes se poderiam encontrar aquém de setecentos.

Assim, surgiu o presente trabalho - Do Objeto ao Museu - que pretende não só ser um percurso histórico da formação dos museus em Portugal, como levantar uma questão "genética" do aparecimento do objeto museológico.

Procurei analisar a formação da cultura material do homem e atender à ancestralidade da sua origem, para melhor se compreender a gênese e a evolução histórica, do agrupamento dos objetos, em coleção - base primordial, para a criação da instituição museal.
