The world of published gardening books is largely populated by scientific textbooks written by experienced professional gardeners. These books are great and we could not do without them especially if we are seeking to create the perfect garden or have a particular problem.
This book seeks to provide something fundamentally different. It is written from the standpoint of an enthusiastic amateur, for fellow enthusiastic amateurs. It adopts a more relaxed approach where trying out new, often unconventional approaches, and getting it wrong sometimes is absolutely fine and actually a fun way to learn. Speaking of fun this book contains a good deal of humour which seems to me is sadly lacking in so many gardening books. The wider world must think we gardeners have had a funny-bone extraction.
As you will quickly discover from the many true real world anecdotes scattered throughout this book I often get things wrong but am rarely if ever discouraged for long. Like most weeds I soon come back even stronger. Despite my feeble well meaning fumbling, and to my great surprise, from time to time things do go well and I have included many such photographs in this book not least to show off. All of the photos are taken by me because frankly most folk have got better things to do than take photos of my plants.
As the title suggests this humble offering concentrates on small gardens whatever that means. A quick view of any new housing development quickly reveals the sad but true fact that the average garden is getting smaller and smaller, to the point where many are very limited in what can be done with them.
This book deliberately does not contain many answers, although the odd hopefully helpful suggestion may have slipped through here and there. Neither will Joe or Josephine find the answer to why their prize bloom has ugly black blotches this year, nor indeed any helpful suggestions as to what to do about it. Our many excellent gardening magazines have Q&A letters pages to deal with that.
This volume does contain suggestions as to what decisions you may choose to ponder over time. This is more designed for discussing with your mates down at the Dog and Duck pub rather than some formal scientific analysis.
I love gardening but I do not wish to spend every waking hour fixating on it. I do not compose gardening poems in my sleep and neither do I sing gardening songs to myself in the bath for which all within earshot are eternally thankful I can assure you.
Please come inside and let's enjoy having a good ponder together (I really must work on my chat up lines) around the ever changing world of gardening.
