Between October 1997 and March 1998, Donato Bilancia murdered seventeen people across the Italian Riviera in a killing spree that terrorized northwest Italy and baffled investigators. This comprehensive account examines how a forty-six-year-old professional burglar with no history of violence transformed into one of Italy's most prolific serial killers after a devastating gambling betrayal triggered catastrophic narcissistic rage. Finally, it follows his twenty-two years of imprisonment during which he never developed genuine remorse or rehabilitation, ending with his death from COVID-19 in December 2020, and considers the lasting lessons his case provides about investigating serial violence, the limits of rehabilitation, and the intersection of gambling addiction, personality disorder, and explosive rage.
