A phone call jars Michael awake before work one October afternoon. His estranged mother is asking about his fraternal twin sister, Michelle. She hasn't been heard from for a week. Michael hasn't seen her for nearly two months.

The call from his mom-unusual. His sister's absence-not so much. When he receives a call from Michelle later that same day, he learns she's in Kansas. Alone. Afraid. And in trouble; nothing new for her.

Michael dismisses her cries for help but is unable to ever again reach her at the same Kansas number. Stoked by a nagging worry, he reaches out to the few people close to her: her roommate, her ex, and her coworkers. But no one knows anything. This may not be Michelle's usual dramatics for attention; this might be real.
