Dalla prefazione:
Dove il cielo scende" era inizialmente il verso centrale di un haiku, composto a Camporosso in Valcanale nell'estate del 2016, quindi è divenuto il titolo della raccolta che lo conteneva; infine ho trovato che fosse il titolo più adatto per questa antologia che include anche "I gabbiani", "I mesi" e "Le stagioni delle 17 sillabe". Queste ultime comprendono gli haiku di quattro distinti periodi compositivi, ciascuno ispirato da un particolare luogo. Si succedono così nell'arco di circa un decennio il Bosco del Farneto, nei pressi del Ferdinandeo a Trieste, che attraversavo a piedi per recarmi al lavoro; la Bassa friulana, soprattutto la zona oltre il fiume Isonzo compresa fra Fiumicello, Villa Vicentina e Ruda, terra natale di mia moglie; Altura, il rione di Trieste dove vivo; la Val Canale, prediletto luogo di villeggiatura.

Ho cominciato a scrivere poesie nei tardi anni '80. Poi ho scoperto la letteratura americana grazie all'antologia "Americana" di Elio Vittorini, ristampata da Bompiani in quegli anni. Mi piaceva quel linguaggio diretto, di forte impatto, fatto di frasi concise, in successione, una dopo l'altra. Risalgono ad allora due romanzi brevi rimasti inediti. Col nuovo millennio scoprii la poesia tradizionale giapponese: gli haiku. Poesie brevi, di tre versi, 5, 7, 5, sillabe: 17 sillabe in tutto. Leggevo Basho, Ryokan, Shiki, Issa, Buson, ma in traduzione le sillabe erano ben più di 17 e questo non mi soddisfaceva, così cominciai a scriverne anch'io. Gli haiku erano una specie di personalissimo diario con cui annotavo, in quella forma concisa, ciò che vedevo e che in qualche modo mi affascinava e mi colpiva. Ho cominciato a pubblicare haiku nel 2013 per LibertàEdizioni. Nel 2016 ho scoperto il self publishing e sono approdato a CreateSpace pubblicandovi haiku, poesie, racconti brevi e brevissimi, aforismi e un libro dedicato al tangram.
