'Down the Gwli' is set in 1990 in a former mining village in the Rhondda Fach, South Wales, called Trellechau. The village coal mine closed in the 1970s and the influence of the chapel and the Labour party is starting to wane after nearly 11 years of Conservative rule. The valley is starting to green up again and rewild after 150 years of industrial activity; however, there are still some coal tips and areas of post-industrial blight.

The main character is Blodwen (Blod) Lewis: a quintessential valleys' Mam (main & pivotal character) - struggling with the onset of the menopause and managing her many family commitments. Her husband Len is bigoted and has a short temper but he is a good provider and underneath all the bluster and politically incorrect comments, he is a good man.

The play mainly deals with Blod's struggle to keep he husband, Len, and her Mam (Elise Lewis) happy and worrying about her children, Theresa and Justin. Blod is a 'martyr' but is as tough as old boots. When she was a child she spend lots of time with her Great Aunt Molly who was originally from Preston and a proud Lancashire lass. That is why Blod regularly uses the possessive adjective 'Our' when referring to family members e.g. our Fanw in Maerdy. She is devoted to her Mam and does everything she can to keep Mam happy and clean. She was so pleased when Theresa managed to get a stair lift installed. Blod is a romantic at heart and she often day dreams about some of the local GPs e.g. Dr Khan and David's business partner Jean-Pierre Chateauvert. Blod was delighted when of her female neighbours commented that 'Blod do swill down her front, regular like, and she do keep a lovely step'.

Blod likes a fag (cigarette) and loves to clec (gossip); she is fascinated with her friends and neighbours' medical history. She is also au fait with all of the local GPs who are of South Asian heritage. A lot of her female family members have had a 'breakdown' and are taking Mogadon and Tryptizol. Blod's arch enemy/nemesis is Beryl Pugh aka that Beryl from Ynysheear (Ynyshir). Blod and Beryl cross paths many times throughout the play.

Even though there are many signs of closet activities taking place in her family involving her son Justin, her brother David, Jean-Pierre and Mam's neighbours, Geraint and Huw, Blod is either in denial or seems to be blissfully unaware of what is really going on. All is revealed in the explosive final two scenes.
