ABOUT THE AUTHOR I grew up in Westfir, Oregon, a small, company-owned timber community on the western slopes of the Cascade mountains about forty miles southeast of Eugene. I didn't particularly like writing in school. Didn't hate it. Just didn't get much of a vibe from doing it. Then one afternoon in the highlands of South Viet Nam, not too far from An Khe, US Army mail call produced a letter from a classmate of my sister-in-law. As I recall it was in response to a class project to write to a soldier. It included a poem she had written. That evening, having time on my hands as I did most evenings there, I decided to respond to her in kind and wrote "It's Always Autumn in Viet Nam." soon followed by: "Hero" and "DMZ." I liked it! I found it surprising and satisfying to actually create something that two weeks later I still liked. Over the years through raising kids and chasing careers, I sporadically wrote a few pieces but never settled into serious, regular writing until after I retired. I have been a bureaucrat, a salesman, a chimney sweep, a consultant, a choker setter, an organizational trainer, a local government facilitator, and a delivery driver. None of these satisfied me as much as being able to write, although my current part-time auto parts delivery job is about as perfect a complement to writing as you can find.
