Hoffmanns im psychoanalytischen Kontext. Diesbezüglich wird versucht mit klassischer sowie moderner Literatur der Psychoanalyse ein Profil zu erstellen, welches auf die Protagonisten verschiedener Werke Hoffmanns anwendbar ist. Mithilfe dieses psychoanalytischen Profils werden letztendlich drei Texte näher untersucht: "Die Elixiere des Teufels", "Der Sandmann" sowie "Die Brautwahl". In jedem dieser Werke lassen sich Charaktere finden, welche auffällige psychotische, wenn nicht sogar psychopathologische Züge besitzen. Zu diesen Charakteren gehören der Mönch Medardus, in "Die Elixiere des Teufels", Nathanael, in "Der Sandmann" und der geheime Kanzleisekretär in dem Werk "Die Brautwahl". Des Weiteren wird versucht sich einem in der Hoffmann-Forschung sehr beliebten Thema zu nähern: Der geistige Zustand des Autors selbst. Anhand von Briefen, Tagebüchern und anderen nicht fiktionalen Texten wird versucht ein Einblick in die Psyche Hoffmanns zu gewinnen und inwiefern der Forschungszweig der Psychoanalyse sein Leben sowie sein Schaffen als Autor geprägt hat.
