When most people think about civil aviation, or when they are considering flying lessons, the vast majority have the small single-engine airplane in mind. But the world of aviation includes a wide variation of many types of aircraft.

Unsurprisingly, there are many questions about the different ratings that a pilot may earn, so Earning Aviation Flight Ratings was produced to explain many of these ratings. It includes all Airplane ratings, which are Single-engine Land, Single-engine Sea, Multiengine Land, and Multiengine Sea. Both Rotorcraft classes including Helicopter and Gyroplane are explained. Other aircraft groups which are described are Glider and Hot Air Balloons. And other ratings and qualifications are covered, such as the Instrument Rating for Airplanes, the Glider Tow Pilot Endorsement, Sky Diving Jump Pilot, Crop Duster, and Certificated Flight Instructor.

After earning their first rating, aviators may increase their knowledge of aviation by earning more aircraft ratings, which are often referred to as add-on ratings. Beginning with the Airplane Single-engine Land rating, the text continues with descriptions of the subtle differences for different ratings. There are new things to learn for each rating, such as how to sail in an airplane on water for the seaplane rating, or how to hover a helicopter in a whole new realm of flight. Glider pilots learn the tricks of soaring for hours in a sailplane over long cross country flights. Balloon pilots learn the intimate nuances of floating with the wind, and how to direct a crew in the assembly of the components, and how to assist during inflation of the envelope.
