Est-il l�gitime de s'engager lorsqu'on est un savant? Oui, affirme Marcel Mauss (1872-1950) au tournant de ce si�cle, mais c'est un homme de science qu'il convient de le faire. Autrement dit, s'il lui revient bien d'�clairer les grands enjeux sociaux et politiques et de dire aux soci�t�s si elles font bien, pratiquement et id�alement, de poursuivre dans la voie qu'elles ont choisie, le scientifique ne saurait renoncer, en �largissant son public, aux principes qui le guident dans l'exercice de son m�tier: probit�, rigueur, refus du proph�tisme.

Cette nouvelle conception de la responsabilit� du savant, le pionnier des sciences sociales et humaines en France la met en pratique d�s les ann�es 1890 alors qu'il est �tudiant � Bordeaux, fr�quentant le Groupe des �tudiants socialistes, adh�rant au Parti ouvrier fran�ais, tout en s'attachant � d�finir les fondements d'un socialisme humaniste. L'Affaire Dreyfus (il s'engagera vivement aux c�t�s des dreyfusards) puis la Premi�re Guerre mondiale (le pacifiste internationaliste qu'il est se portera volontaire apr�s l'assassinat de Jaur�s) marqueront de fa�on d�cisive l'intellectuel et le militant. Et tandis que, jusqu'� sa mort, Mauss s'attachera � percer le myst�re du lien social, mobilisant l'histoire des religions, l'ethnographie, la philologie, la sociologie pour comprendre comment les soci�t�s se constituent et comment elles se reproduisent, il multipliera les interventions politiques (dans L'Humanit� avant 1920, Le Populaire ensuite, telle ou telle revue savante, � travers aussi son engagement dans le mouvement coop�ratif, les cours qu'il dispense � la Bourse du travail ou ailleurs) pour expliquer qu'il n'est pas de d�mocratie sans vie associative dynamique et sans morale fond�e sur la solidarit� et la r�ciprocit�. Dans la fid�lit� � Jaur�s, l'adh�sion au parti socialiste SFIO ira pour lui de soi, tout comme la participation au journal L'Humanit� d�s 1904. A l'heure de la mont�e des p�rils, il observera sans complaisance la r�volution d'Octobre et s'engagera dans le combat antifasciste.
