A ten-year journey to the edge of a continent, where two oceans meet beneath one ancient mountain.
Edge of the Continent: The Western Cape is a fine-art photography book capturing one of the most remarkable corners of the earth: the south-western tip of Africa, where the cold Atlantic meets towering mountains, ancient forests, and the vast open silence of the Karoo.
Over ten years, photographer Arnold Petersen returned to these coastlines, mountains, and plains again and again, waiting for the season, the light, and the weather to come right. The result is a collection of medium-format landscape images spanning the six distinct regions of South Africa's Western Cape: Cape Town and its iconic Table Mountain, the wild West Coast, the celebrated Cape Winelands, the rolling Overberg, the timeless Great Karoo, and the lush forests of the Garden Route.
But this is more than a book of beautiful pictures. Each photograph is paired with a short Photographer's Note, a few quiet lines that carry what the camera cannot: the cold coming off the sea, the smell of fynbos after rain, the deep history beneath the soil, and the human story rooted in each place. Together, the images and the words give you not just a view of the Western Cape, but the feeling of standing there.
Whether you have walked these shores or only dreamed of them, this is a book to return to. A large-format coffee table book of 338 pages, case-bound in landscape format at 280 x 216 mm, it is a landmark photographic tribute to the Western Cape, an unforgettable centrepiece for the home, and an exceptional gift for anyone who loves travel, nature, Africa, and the art of fine photography.
Petersen, Arnold: - Arnold Petersen is a South African photographer based in Cape Town. He has spent more than eighteen years building artificial intelligence systems used around the world, work that depends on finding the order inside what first looks like noise, a habit that carries directly into how he sees a landscape, not as separate elements but as one connected system. His photography has taken him to the remote edges of several continents, though it is the Western Cape he knows most deeply and returns to most often. Edge of the Continent: The Western Cape is the result of more than a decade spent photographing the six regions of the Cape across every season and shift of light. He is also the author of Cape Town: A Distinct Travel Guide: Authentic Experiences from a True Capetonian, available worldwide.
