Edmund Dulac's Picture Book for the French Red Cross is a stunning work, produced in the midst of the First World War, by a true genius of illustration. It was originally published in 1915, and contains twenty colour images. Dulac was a French-born, British naturalised magazine illustrator, book illustrator and stamp designer, who despite his increasing years, wished to help the war effort in any way he could. The drawings are delicately drawn, notable for their classic fairy tale charms and Japanese stylistic influence. The skilfully coloured images further refine the enchantingly simple story telling - all presented together in this text. It is a book to be enjoyed by both young and old; a beautiful object, produced at a time of great peril. Stories include: The Story of the Bird Feng (A Chinese Tale), Layla and Majnun (A Persian Love Story), The Nightingale (Hans Christian Andersen), Cinderella (A French Fairy Tale), Bluebeard (A French Tale), The Lady Badoura (Arabian Nights) and others.
