Il minatore fogliare Liriomyza trifolii � uno dei parassiti pi� dannosi, che causa gravi danni al pomodoro nella misura del 30-40%. Piccoli vermi gialli si schiudono e si nutrono all'interno del tessuto fogliare, lasciando lunghi tunnel bianchi, sottili e tortuosi (mine) attraverso la foglia. La ferita fogliare causata dalla femmina di L. trifolii sulla superficie superiore delle foglie per la deposizione delle uova crea habitat favorevoli all'infezione da agenti patogeni come batteri e funghi. Dopo la schiusa, le larve scavano gallerie attraverso i tessuti fogliari e si nutrono del mesofillo delle foglie, creando gallerie serpeggianti e macchie sulla superficie superiore. Il tasso di fotosintesi delle foglie colpite si riduce. In caso di infestazione grave, le piante possono essere completamente defogliate dal danno combinato delle larve della minatrice fogliare e degli agenti patogeni delle piante. Lo stress delle piante, la perdita di umidit� o le scottature solari dei frutti si verificano a causa dell'ombreggiamento delle foglie. Questo tipo di danno causato dalla minatrice fogliare ha portato a una diminuzione della resa dei frutti. Considerando tutti questi fatti, le presenti indagini sono state intraprese per valutare metodi alternativi pi� sicuri e compatibili di controllo dei parassiti con un approccio integrato che utilizza prodotti botanici come NSE, olio di karanj, rispetto ad alcuni insetticidi pi� recenti.
