Mit der standigen Zunahme des StraBenverkehrs wachst das Interesse der Men- schen an den vielfaltigen Problemen, die die gemeinsame Benutzung der Verkehrs- wege mit sich bringen. So reichen bereits durchgefiihrte Untersuchungen vom Ver- halten der FuBganger bis zu GesetzmaBigkeiten des gestorten Fahrzeugstromes in GroBstadten. Demgegeniiber scheint der Verkehr auf iibersichtlichen Bundes- straBen wenig Interessantes zu bieten. Lediglich die Verkehrsdichte, Fahrzeug- geschwindigkeiten und Zeitabstande zwischen den Fahrzeugen sind Unter- suchungsobjekte, die hier und da erortert werden. Urn so verwunderlicher ist es, daB es bisher trotz der anscheinend einfachen V organge nicht gelungen ist, eine statistische GesetzmaBigkeit aufzustellen, welche die Schwankungen der als Zeit- liicken bezeichneten Zeitabstande zwischen zwei an einem festen Standort vor- iiberfahrenden Fahrzeugen in allen Fallen zu erfassen vermag. Eine solche Ver- teilung sagt wesentlich mehr iiber den Verkehrsablauf aus als bloBe Zahlenwerte aus der Verkehrsstatistik. So kann man beispielsweise Mittelwert, Streuung und Spannweite entnehmen sowie Gruppenbildungen erkennen, alles Merkmale, die insbesondere fiireinen Verkehrsweg wichtig sind, der von anderen gekreuzt wird oder in den andere einmiinden. Von der Verteilung der Zeitliicken hiingt es weit- gehend ab, wie lange Fahrzeuge auf ihre Einfahrt in den betrachteten Verkehrs- weg warten mussen, sofern sie nicht durch V orfahrtsregeln oder Ampeln begiin- stigt werden. Vielfach nimmt man an, daB die Zeitliicken des uftgestorten Verkehrsstromes nach einer statistischen Verteilung schwanken, die durch eine Exponentialverteilung zufriedenstellend angenahert werden kann. Bei Untersuchungen der Zeitliicken erhiilt man jedoch auch empirische Verteilungen, die offensichtlich keine Ahnlich- keit mit der Exponentialverteilung zeigen.
