Eine Vorlesung über Festkörperphysik gehört heute an allen Universitäten und Techni- schen Hochschulen zu den Pflichtveranstaltungen für Physikstudenten nach Abschlu des Vordiploms. Der Umfang des Stoffangebots ist hierbei allerdings sehr unterschied- lich und hängt im allgemeinen von den Forschungsschwerpunkten an der jeweiligen Hochschule ab. Dieses Buch ist insbesondere für solche Studenten vorgesehen, die eine Beschäftigung mit der Festkörperphysik zwar nicht zum Schwerpunkt ihrer physikali- schen Ausbildung machen wollen, jedoch mit den grundlegenden Gesetzmä igkeiten und Betrachtungsweisen in der Festkörperphysik vertraut werden möchten. Die behan- delten Themen werden in einer straffen und möglichst exakten Darstellungsweise angeboten. Zum Verständnis des Buches werden neben einem physikalischen Grundwissen, wie es von einem Physikstudenten bis zum Vordiplom erworben wird, elementare Kenntnisse in der Atomphysik und der Quantenmechanik benötigt. Ergebnisse aus der Thermo- dynamik und Statistik, die in diesem Buch benutzt werden, werden kurz im Anhang erläutert. In allen Gleichungen wird grundsätzlich das internationale Ma system (SI) verwendet. Bei Längenangaben im atomaren Bereich mochte der Verfasser aller- dings auf die praktische Einheit Angström nicht verzichten. Für die kritische Durchsicht des Manuskripts und für viele wertvolle Hinweise danke ich recht herzlich meinen Institutskollegen Prof. Dr. P. Herzog und Dr. G. Mertler. Frau E.
