Das vorliegende Bueh enthlHt im wesentliehen den Inhalt einer Vor- lesung tiber die Theorie des Magnetismus, die sich an Studierende der Physik von mittleren Semestern an wandte. In seinem Aufbau folgt das Bueh der nattirlichen Einteilung der magnetisehen Substanzen, d. h. es werden zuerst der Diamagnetismus, dann der Paramagnetismus und zum SehluB der Ferromagnetismus bzw. Antiferro- und Ferri- magnetismus behandelt. NaturgemaB bringt es der besehrankte Umfang des Buehs mit sich, daB einige Teilgebiete des Magnetismus weniger ausftihrlieh behandelt werden als andere. So liegt im ersten Teil des Buehs der Akzent auf dem de Haas-van Alpheneffekt, der ftir das Verhalten der Elektronen im Kristall auBerst instruktiv ist. 1m zweiten Teil ist das Sehwergewieht auf dem EinfluB des Kristallfelds auf den Paramagnetismus der Atome und den damit verbundenen Problemen (Kramers-Theorem, adiabatisehe Entmagnetisierung, paramagnetisehe Resonanz usw. ) gelegt worden. Der tiberwiegende Teil des letzten Absehnitts ist der Austausehweehselwirkung und dem resultierenden Vielteilchenproblem fUr ein System atomarer Spins gewidmet. Die Eigenschaften dieses Systems werden in ver ehiedenen Naherungen diskutiert. Auf die Darstellung der teehniseh interessanten Probleme (Hysterese, Magnetostriktion usw. ) muBte jedoeh in diesem Rahmen verziehtet werden. Der interessierte Leser wird jedoeh keine Mtihe haben, sich anhand der zitierten Literatur eingehend in die Materie ei nzuarbei ten.
