Bei der 3. Auflage dieses Arbeitshefts standen folgende Gesichtspunkte im Vordergrund: Historische und gegenwartssprachliche Teile sollten stärker getrennt, der historische Aspekt insgesamt zurückgenommen werden. Dennoch sollte dargestellt werden, da sich Sprache ständig verändert, aber das lä t sich auch an gegenwartssprachlichem Material demonstrieren.

Die Theoriedebatten der 70er und 80er Jahre sind heute nicht mehr aktuell, das Interesse an der Theorie der Wortbildung ist überwiegend der auf deskriptiv-funktionaler Basis arbeitenden Wortbildungspraxis gewichen. Vieles, was noch 1986 zur Theorie der Wortbildung gesagt werden mu te, konnte jetzt wegfallen.

Darüber hinaus wurde der exemplarische Charakter der Einführung verdeutlicht. Aus diesem Grund wurden die zentralen Wortbildungstypen "Komposition" und "Derivation" nur noch an den für sie besonders typischen Hauptwortarten exemplifiziert, der Typ der Komposition am Substantiv, der Typ der Derivation am Adjektiv. An der Wortbildung des Verbs haben dagegen beide Typen gleicherma en Anteil. Den Abschlu des Hefts bilden textbezogene und psycholinguistische Fragestellungen und ein Ausblick auf künftig interessante Bereiche wie die Wortbildung in der elektronischen Kommunikation. Damit zeichnet das Heft den Gang der sprachwissenschaftlichen Forschung der letzten fünfzig Jahre nach, von der historischen Sprachwissenschaft (Henzen) über den klassischen, morphologiezentrierten Strukturalismus (Fleischer), über syntax- und semantikdominierte Sehweisen (Lees, Kürschner) zu pragmalinguistischen, textbezogenen.
