Ekstase ist eine in allen Phasen der europäischen und au ereuropäischen Geschichte bis zur Gegenwart vielfach belegte Erscheinung. Neuzeitliche Wissenschaften haben das Phänomen mit der je eigenen Methode zu ergründen gesucht, doch war es bereits Spekulationsfeld der mittelalterlichen Gelehrten. Im Zentrum der Untersuchung steht das Verhältnis der in unterschiedlichen literarischen Genres der mittelalterlichen Literatur bezeugten Entgrenzungserfahrungen zu den nicht-literarischen, aber gleichwohl über fiktionale Elemente verfügenden Quellen im jeweiligen Kontext. In der altnordischen Literatur bezeugen die bekannten Wutkrieger oder Berserker eine Methode des ekstatischen Kämpfertums, das noch in der hochmittelalterlichen Literatur Spuren hinterlässt, aber durch das höfische Ideal der Affektkontrolle abgelöst erscheint. Der häufige Empfang von Visionen und deren begleitende ekstatische Zustände gehörten zu den Merkmalen der mystischen Heiligen. Die mystische Literatur kreist um die Erfahrung der Gotteseinheit die in abstrakter Virtuosität thematisiert, aber auch affektiv somatisch erfahren werden kann. Eine Entrückung aus der ich-gebundenen Wirklichkeit und die damit verbundene Offenbarung, blieb für das Christentum bis in die Neuzeit eine akzeptierte Form der Wahrheits- und Gotteserkenntnis. Ekstatische Visionen und Prophezeiungen, im Hochmittelalter noch als wertvollere Geschichtsquelle ernst genommen, fanden in der um politische Suprematie kämpfenden Kirche des Spätmittelalters wenig Widerhall, in Bezug auf die Hexen entschiedenen Widerstand.
Die Autorin: Christa Agnes Tuczay, geboren 1952; Studium der Germanistik und Philosophie an der Universität Wien; seit 1981 Mitarbeit am Forschungsprojekt der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften «Motiv-Index der deutschsprachigen weltlichen Erzählliteratur» (gedruckt in 6 Bänden 2006); seit 1991 Lehrbeauftragte an der Universität Wien am Institut für Germanistik; zahlreiche Publikationen zu Erzählforschung, Magiegeschichte und der deutschen Literatur des hohen und späten Mittelalters in kulturgeschichtlichen Bezügen.
