Tan hondos, graves y extensos son los efectos causados en la mujer por los malos tratos que le inflige su pareja que no sólo hieren el ser íntimo de ella y rompen su integridad psicológica y moral sino que abarcan y se extienden también a sus hijos, a sus nietos, a su entorno, a sus relaciones sociales, afectan a su profesión, a su salud y a su forma de vida posiblemente para siempre. Los daños condicionan profundamente sus relaciones posteriores con amigos, familiares, trabajo, ulteriores parejas y hasta el lugar que esa mujer puede habitar, pues no vuelve nunca a ser ella misma ni a encontrarse con su ser esencial completo. La ceguera social que tapa y silencia la gravedad de esos daños agranda aún más el dolor de la mujer y esconde a los ojos de todos y de la propia mujer su condición de superviviente. Tan sólo a través de la comprensión de la hondura del daño sufrido, el apoyo de otras personas, el trabajo sistemático de crecimiento personal de la superviviente y la profunda aceptación de lo irreparable, unido a la actitud comprensiva de su entorno y sobre todo a la fuerza de la amistad con otras mujeres, puede la mujer superviviente de malos tratos lograr la dignidad a que tiene derecho y restablecer la paz consigo misma y con la vida. En esta novela hay tres protagonistas y tres historias entrelazadas. En esencia El canario desnudo trata del daño a largo plazo que estas tres mujeres reciben de un solo hombre, representado por el canario desnudo. Pero ellas son capaces de reestructurarse, ayudarse, cuidarse, apoyarse, formar red y encontrar para sí nuevos planteamientos de vida y de futuro. En "El canario desnudo" Graciela Valdés, salvadoreña, inmigrante, dañada por los avatares de su extraña vida, es veterana acompañante de enfermos graves y terminales para una ONG madrileña que la escoge como tutora de Julia del Valle, mujer maltratada por su pareja quince años atrás, ya separada y supuestamente curada. Julia trata de aprender con Graciela tácticas de acompañamiento de enfermos. Un día, Graciela es llamada de urgencia al hospital Doce de Octubre para acompañar a un accidentado que está en la UVI y necesita estimulación para salir del coma. Conforme el herido va recuperando la memoria y Julia cae en la cuenta de quién es ese hombre, las implicaciones de la realidad levantan tal tormenta de emociones enquistadas en ella, que su vida y la de las mujeres de su entorno se verá profundamente alterada en tan sólo seis días.
